ABOUT THE PROJECT:

"Stories from Reality" is a participative documentary series, that, in season one, portrays people in a coincidently chosen rural area within Europe. In September 2014 we, a team of three, set out to a village in North Wales with my yellow converted camper van. On board we had good music, lots of technical equipment and a daring idea, of which nobody knew would actually work out at all. We entered the village, searching for people of all ages who would spontaneously film with us. We offered them a catalogue with several segments in it. People could choose from those segments.
The segments are ways of storytelling, tiny visual experiments and manuals at the same time. They seek to explore methods of how to tell a life's story and how it is constituted, involving picture, written word, memory and myth. Each episode consists of a carefully arranged network of those segments.

You can put it like this:
"Imagine it as a scaffolding that we carry with us in the bus. Now imagine another thing: a person's life story classically symbolised as a well rooted tree. We stop by one of those trees to erect the scaffolding next to it. We meet on the road, in a rural area. The person we meet can rearrange the scaffolding to their preference and we will then climb the tree together, to see which stories we will find based at the roots, growing at the top and hidden within all the tiny branches in between."
Now, five episodes, 19 to 36 minutes in length, portraying people aged between 26 - 75 years, have resulted from that one month in North Wales. You can watch them here on the website or on vimeo.

They are to be understood as the first results of our experiment, and we hope to restructure and develop them further for the next season – with the help of your FEEDBACK.

APPROACH:

TV is overflowing with seemingly real and first hand stories, that often turn out to be woven from scripts. We set out, looking for real people who have a story to tell. People are invited to join an experimental setting. We invite the guest to play with us and to explore techniques of storytelling. For this show, the guest is their own host. And we, the team, are the helpers. We want to take time to listen. It is our declared purpose to give our guest freedom of choice and much room to experiment. We set out for an adventure and there is no prior research. We never know what we're going to find; we want to challenge our viewers. And on the long run: We want you to join in!

FUTUROLOGY:

Right now it is uncertain when and where we will film the next season. We are still looking for a suitable platform to cooperate. For the months after the airing of the pilot, the feedback you give will be the main focus. Meanwhile we are already reworking the concept partially. We intend to improve the program, with your feedback as well as our own ideas. In the meantime:
